The waxy substance in the human body known as cholesterol comes primarily in two recognized types, HDL and LDL. HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, is typically spoken of as the good cholesterol, while LDL, or low density lipoprotein, is the undesirable form of cholesterol.

LDL generally transports cholesterol from the liver to the rest of the body and, if too much is circulating in a person's bloodstream, it can slowly build up on the inner walls of the vital arteries which supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it forms plaque in the body, which is a thick, hard deposit that can clog the arteries; this may then result in the disease which is known as atherosclerosis.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is HDL, which is considered to be the good form of cholesterol, because a high level of it seems to be protective against heart attacks in people. It is thought that HDL transports cholesterol in the body back to the liver, where it can be processed for disposal from the body. As a result, a low level of HDL in the body may inhibit this removal action and increase the risk of having a heart attack.

There is also another element which should be mentioned is the formation of triglycerides, which are a kind of fat that is made in your body and also found in food. Did you ever wonder how extra servings of potato turned into fat? Well, in large part, you can thank triglycerides. The reason that it is involved in this particular subject matter is because people who have high triglyceride levels are more likely to have high cholesterol, a high LDL cholesterol, a lower HDL cholesterol level and may be at greater risk for heart disease.

Merely expecting that a high cholesterol cure will be available in a pill bottle is not a reasonable plan for better health. Medication can be of great value when all else fails, but it should be saved for a real emergency.
