Feline Leukemia Virus Can Affect Your Kitty Too, So Be Careful

(Posted by admin | 0 Comment)

What is FeLV? FeLV, or Feline Leukemia Virus, is amongst the most common diseases that a cat could get. FeLV is not a cancer, but a virus that causes cancer to grow in the blood cells.

Many cats acquire this virus and can fight it off. If this occurs, then you will likely never even realize that your cat had the virus. On the contrary, if your cat's immune system is hampered, or maybe, for some other reason the virus makes its way into the bloodstream, then it could cause your kitty to have many health issues and, eventually, result in cancer.

Your cat may be showing a few of the the following signs: anemia, insufficient hunger, weight loss, blood in the stool, jaundice, diarrhea, constipation, poor coats, enlarged lymph nodes, respiratory problem. If your cat suffers any of these signs please get him to the vet. It may or may not be FeLV, but it has to be taken care of immediately.

FeLV is contagious from cat to cat. It might be spread via saliva, tears, and probably also urine and feces. If you have a cat that you know carries Feline Leukemia Virus, then it is essential that you keep it far from other cats. But, humans can not contract Feline Leukemia Virus, so it is safe for you to spend lots of time with your kitty!

There are 2 blood tests which are used to diagnose the cat. The first test can be carried out quickly at your vet's office, the second has to be sent to a lab for processing. Once a cat has FeLV, he can live from a couple of weeks to a month or two, depending on how quick the disease develops and the quality of treatment he is obtaining.

There is no cure for this, but there are vaccinations. This is why it is very important to get your cat vaccinated, particularly when he goes outdoors, and is around some other cats.
