Adopting A Pet Cat - Cat-Proofing Your Home

(Posted by admin | 0 Comment)

When you are going to adopt your first cat, you need to do certain groundwork to your house prior to taking the cat home. This is to make sure that there is nothing around that may hurt the kitty, as well as making certain that there is nothing around that the cat can harm.

While cat-proofing your house, remember that cats are going to eat just about anything and will play with just about anything. With this in mind, you may observe you have got lots of work to do.

Make sure all your windows have good screens on them. Cats love to spend time in the windowpane, however are also susceptible to falling out, if the screens aren't secure or are ripped. Also try to fasten up all cords for window blinds, as these are possible hazards as well.

In regards to your bathroom areas, make sure all medicines are secure and also cannot be opened up. Cats are smart, they will knock over bottles to get into them. Additionally, get into the practice of putting the toilet lid down. Kitties like to drink out of the toilet and can lose their balance and fall in and possibly drown. You can try just shutting the door, but I do know lots of cats that can open doors.

You may want to consider protecting your cabinets with baby-locks. These are relatively inexpensive and cats love to investigate cabinets. I remember after I initially got my cat, I couldn't discover where he was. I finally found him sleeping in the cabinet! Luckily it was not one with cleansing liquids, however I did make sure to place locks on all the cabinets--especially the ones with cleaning supplies in them.

Check the undersides of your furniture for openings. Right now, this might seem strange. But, cats love to hide under furniture. When I initially got my kitty (the exact same one who slept in the cabinet), he hid an additional place where I couldn't find him. Finally, I sat on the recliner and heard a meow. The kitty had crawled into an opening on the bottom part of the recliner and also was inside the seat!

Make sure your garbage bins have lids to them. Kitties like to play around in the garbage tending to make an awful mess if allowed to! Also, should you toss something that smells good to them (think chicken, seafood, beef), then they may try to scrounge in the garbage for it.

These are all of the significant things that can be done to begin to make your house cat-proof. Thank you for adopting a cat. There are too many cats in the shelters. If you really like the kitty, then tell your pals about your experience, maybe they will adopt a cat too! Best of luck with your kitty!
